Recently, Chicago-based hard rock band, Disturbed enlisted Charlie Terrell and the Daddy Van team to write and direct the video to the lead single off Asylum, the band’s fifth LP. “The Animal” video is a dark, eerie video that uses several elements of Charlie Terrell’s iconic digital art to produce a voodoo and tribal art inspired theme.

Charlie Terrell’s first foray into the world of writing and directing came in the form of his acclaimed musical, “Taking the Jesus Pill” a story of a family in gothic, bible thumping South. It was in the midst of production that Terrell met Polly Parsons, daughter of the venerable Gram Parsons and the two formed a working relationship that would eventually create Daddy Van Productions.

In addition to creating the video content for several high-profile artists, including Maroon 5, Motley Crue, Disturbed, and Rascal Flatts, the Daddy Van Production team also pitches treatments to their clients to produce music videos.

“Definitely because Charlie and his production team hit it out of the park with the live show, we said why not go to him and see if he would write a treatment for “The Animal”, said Dan Donegan, Disturbed guitarist. “We’ve already established that working relationship and we already gained our trust in an outside person to get creative in making sure the images go hand in hand with our message.”

Charlie’s macabre and romantic style echoes Disturbed’s music nicely, as both seem to be influenced by darker sentiments.

“We get treatments from multiple directors out there,” continued Donegan, “and Charlie submitted his and it was dark, it was cool, it was something different. It was a different location, it was something we haven’t done before.”

Using different digital film and video software, Terrell’s influences can manifest in several different ways. From splashes of color behind Maroon 5, the distorted and warped asylum scenes from disturbed, to the over-the-top hand that guides Tommy Lee’s drum roller coaster, his creations can be both entertaining and serious works of art.

Terrell has nothing but good things to say about his clients, as he’s always inspired by their vision. Satisfaction seems to be his highest priority.
